Morphettville: Sportingbet Classic (Group 1) 6f, 2yo+ fillies and mares
SPRINT sensation Black Caviar (Peter Moody/Luke Nolen) set an Australasian city record of 20 consecutive wins with another imperious display in the Sportingbet Classic.
The unbeaten daughter of Bel Esprit travelled powerfully from her draw in stall three, before sauntering clear of her nine rivals to maintain her unbeaten record.
Electric from the gate, Nolen had to ease Black Caviar back to get a lead from Just Sybil and Spurcific in the early stages, racing just off the rail in third position.
Rounding the home turn, Black Caviar had already pulled herself past the pace setters and into a clear lead. Powering further clear, Nolen only had to change his hands in the final furlong as Black Caviar extended her winning sequence.
Sistine Angel and Power Princess filled the places, although a major upset was never on the cards.
Returning from a ten week absence, Black Caviar was reported to be “a bit hairy” due to the change in the weather by her trainer but she had far too much quality for her rivals and now has her sights set on a trip to Europe for the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 23.
Black Caviar, who was recording a tenth win at Group 1 level, has the option of returning to Morphettville on May 12 for The Goodwood, should Moody decide she needs one more run before travelling to Britain.
Black Caviar‘s 20th victory takes her one clear of New Zealanders Desert Gold(1915-17) and Gloaming (1919-21), who both recorded 19 consecutive victories at top-level tracks
However, both Miss Petty and Sava Jet won 22 on the spin at low-grade Queensland bush tracks.
