The well-regarded Aljamaaheer landed the King Charles II Stakes at Newmarket.

The rumour mill has been working overtime in relation to the promise of Aljamaaheer and Roger Varian’s colt made amends for defeat on his seasonal reappearance in the seven furlong Listed contest.

The soft ground was seemingly to blame that day but the son of Dubawi confirmed the promise of his maiden win with a one and a half length victory from 2-1 favourite The Nile in the hands of Paul Hanagan.

The runner-up is another promising sort and, like the winner, still holds an entry in the Group One’St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The pair pulled nicely clear of the front-running Balty Boys – who shaped significantly better than on his reappearance – and Saigon, who looked to be struggling when the pace quickened before finishing to good effect.

Mark Johnston’s Van Ellis, who only made his debut in a warm race at this course in April, failed to trouble the principals but was far from disgraced and should fare better in time.

Varian said: “He showed a good turn of foot. Paul gave him a beautiful, educating ride.

“We’ll discuss it with Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum (owner) and Angus Gold (Sheikh Hamdan’s racing manager), but the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot looks the next logical step. Hopefully he can improve again.”
