ENTRIES for the Qipco Sussex Stakes were released on Wednesday and while star sprinter Black Caviar was not among them, a host of stellar names were, including Frankel – the world’s best racehorse.
Qipco had offered a £1 million bonus if Black Caviar had lined up against Frankel at Goodwood on August 1, but connections of the brilliant mare ruled the race off her agenda this week.
However, Frankel, who won the 1m Group 1 last year, may run and he could face some strong competition with Aidan O’Brien entering Camelot, So You Think and Power.
The Richard Hannon-trained Strong Suit, a Group 2 winner at Glorious Goodwood last summer, was also among the 37 horses entered. He could be joined by stablemate Harbour Watch, who has yet to race this season.
David Redvers, racing manager to Qatar Racing Limited, the owners of Strong Suit and part-owners of Harbour Watch, said on Wednesday: “Strong Suit is definitely being aimed at the Sussex Stakes – it’s his big target if everything goes right for him.
“We know he enjoys the track at Goodwood and we think the race will be perfect for him.
“The plan at the moment is for him to make his reappearance at Royal Ascot next month in the Queen Anne Stakes, which should hopefully bring him on nicely.
“We will also definitely look at the race for Harbour Watch. He may also run at Royal Ascot if he is ready in time or alternatively could head straight to Goodwood.
“If he were to go to Goodwood first time out, then we might consider the Lennox Stakes for him instead.”
