Trainer Warren Greatrex has given up his role as owner Malcolm Denmark‘s salaried trainer.

Greatrex moved into Denmark’s Weathercock House yard in August 2009 and has enjoyed plenty of success over the past three National Hunt seasons, both for his former boss and for other owners.

But the young trainer feels now is the right time to branch out as he begins a new chapter in his career at Uplands Stables in Newbury, the former base of legendary handler Fred Winter, next month.

“I’m moving to Uplands and renting 30 boxes and a swimming pool,” said Greatrex.

“The hope is that that number might increase to 60 or 70 at some stage, but with my current outside owners moving their horses with’me, I’ll start off with just over 20.

“Hopefully by August, after the sales, that number will be nearer 30 and I’m looking forward to the challenge.

“I’d like to thank Malcolm for the opportunity he gave’me. He head-hunted’me to take over and I’d like to think I’ve done a decent job.

“I think we’ve trained 53 winners in the three seasons and I just think now is the right time to move on and start off on my own.

“It is a bit daunting and I know it’s going to take a lot of hard work, but I’m not frightened of rolling my sleeves up.

“I think you can get in a bit of a rut when some people have you down as just a salaried trainer and that can sometimes make outside owners a little wary about sending horses to you.

“Some people might think that Malcolm’s horses would be the priority and while that was never the case, that is a scenario people might think would happen.

“The right people have been telling’me I’m doing the right things and hopefully I’ve made a bit of a name for myself.

“I’m moving to the yard where Fred Winter trained, so hopefully that is another attraction for owners.

“Hopefully I’ll have moved into Uplands by mid-June and I’m really excited to get started.”
