Anthony Freedman’s Mawingo had to survive a protest before ‘officially’ winning the Group One Doomben Cup

It was a maiden Group One victory for the trainer whose ex-German trained four year old claimed the feature 10 furlong contest by a short neck under Nash Rawiller in a race and course record time.

Black Caviar’s trainer Peter Moody suffered a rare reverse with the defeat of the odds-on former Luca Cumani inmate Manighar who could finish only third while Moody also saddled the second Lights Of Heaven.

It was Moody and Luke Nolen who attempted to steal the race away by lodging a protest, believing that interference just by the winning post on the first occasion denied their third home the opportunity to finish closer than the eventual beaten margin of two lengths.

However, the stewards dismissed the Moody/Nolen objection, handing Freedman his first Group One victory.

Freedman followed in the footsteps of Hall of Fame brother Lee by winning the $500,000 event. Lee has twice trained the winner of the Doomben Cup – Durbridge in 1994 and Bush Padre in 2003.
