Richard Hughes helped Jane Chapple-Hyam’s Tommy’s Secret prove to be a little money very well spent in the Goodwood Maiden Auction Stakes.

The 5-2 favourite, who was fifth on his racecourse debut at Chester, looked a little out of sorts on the tricky Sussex track in the early stages but leading course rider Hughes soon got him settled.

Just as newcomer Whistling Buddy looked to be putting his stamp on the contest with more than a furlong to run, Tommy’s Secret hit his stride and came two and three-quarter lengths away.

“He’s a tough individual and has just progressed since the first run,” Chapple-Hyam told Racing UK.

“I bought him for £1,000 at Ascot Sales as the breeders had informed’me about the horse and I had someone look at him.

“He’s done the job in a good time. We’ll take him home, turn him out and have a little breather. He’s going to be a fun horse.”

Peter Makin, who trains Whistling Buddy, clearly has his Marlborough stable in fine fettle as Blanc’de Chine produced a fair performance to land the TurfTV For Betting Shops Bonus Handicap.

Second no less than five times as a two-year-old, the grey was finally off the mark at the eighth attempt last December but appears to have improved for a trainer very skilled with sprinters.

Jimmy Fortune pointed the 5-2 favourite straight and true down the middle of the course and she cleared a length and a quarter away from Le King Beau.

Sean Levey is forming a useful association with veteran Liphook trainer John Bridger and the Irish apprentice helped Shifting Star take the Willis Lease Finance Corporation Handicap from the front.

Bridger took control of Shifting Star after the retirement of Walter Swinburn last year and this was his second victory for new connections following a January strike at Lingfield.

Rivals were weaving through the field in an attempt to cut Levey down but the 18-1 shot found the line in time as he finished a neck and a head in front of Piscean and Corporal Maddox.
