Kranji: Singapore Airlines International Cup (Group 1) 1m2f, turf, 3yo+
MUCH-TRAVELLED French veteran Chinchon (Carlos Laffon-Parias/Olivier Doleuze) overwhelmed an international field on Sunday when he posted a three-length victory in the Singapore Airlines International Cup.
There was drama before the Sin$3 million (£1.5m) event when Godolphin’s City Style was withdrawn by the vet after playing up in the stalls.
Chinchon, already a Grade 1 winner in the States, raced well off the pace before being switched out in the straight and delivering a strong challenge between horses.
The seven-year-old, who met trouble in running when fifth last year, powered clear to win going away from Hong Kong’s Zaidan, with front-running Flax keeping on well for the home team to take third another half-length back.
German-trained favourite Zazou had every chance after racing close up on the rail and looked sure to play a major role when produced in the straight only for his run to flatten out in the final furlong. He finished fourth.
Chinchon was having his third outing of the season after winning a Group 3 event at Saint-Cloud in March and then finishing down the field in the Audemars Piguet QEII Cup at Sha Tin.
“I can’t believe it,” said winning jockey Olivier Doleuze. “I’m still up in the air. I’ll come down to earth in a day or so.
“It means an awful lot to’me to win this race in Singapore,” he added. “I was one of the early ones to come out of Europe to ride here, which makes this special. I had a good trip and he improved his position when I asked him, and he finished really well.”
