Trainer Ger Lyons is delighted summer has finally arrived for The Reaper ahead of his run in the Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes at the Curragh on Saturday.

The consistent four-year-old needs to hear his hooves rattle to be seen at his best and with the ground drying out at Irish racing’s headquarters, Lyons is expecting a decent performance.

“He’s an intended runner, subject to the ground being suitable. He needs it fast,” said the County Meath handler.

“He’s a very consistent horse. He went to Dubai and that made a man of him.

“Unfortunately because he needs fast ground and we rarely get it I think we’ll have to do a bit of travelling with him this season.

“We wanted to run him in the Duke of York but the ground was too soft.

“In Naas last time out we ran him just to make sure he wouldn’t act with any cut in it and he hated it.

“The ground should be beautiful by the weekend if the weather stays like it is now.

“There’s no programme for Irish sprinters which is why the English have a good record in this.

“They can run nearly every week if they want to so their sprinters are battle-hardened.

“Ours need to learn how to do it.”
