Albamara Returns At Newbury

Sir Mark Prescott’s Albamara takes a significant drop in class for her seasonal reappearance in the Lord Weinstock Memorial Stakes at Newbury on Thursday.

A daughter of Galileo and triple German Group One winner Albanova from owner-breeder Kirsten Rausing’s Lanwades Stud operation, Albamara was set a difficult test on her most recent outing in the Group One Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket last October.

She was last that day but looked far more promising on her previous outing when cruising clear in a maiden at Epsom and moves up to a potentially more suitable mile and a quarter here.

“She should handle the ground, which is going to be pretty soft,” said Rausing’s racing manager, Lord John FitzGerald.

“As far as I’ve seen she has done well over the winter and is bound to step up in trip as she has moved from two to three.”

Albamara’s main opponent could be the John Gosden-trained Great Heavens, a sister to King George winner Nathaniel who took a maiden at Yarmouth in auspicious style.

Gosden also runs Lingfield Oaks Trial fourth Apothecary while Roger Charlton’s course and distance winner Inchina must put a disappointing effort in the Cheshire Oaks behind her.

Rae Guest will allow Miss Cato to take the plunge at this level, as his filly has risen right through the grades.

Miss Cato made her debut on New Year’s Day when winning a seller at Southwell and has landed four of six career starts, including a handicap at Sandown last month by three and three-quarter lengths.

“She is very well and has been put up 10lb by the handicapper for her win last time, so he obviously thinks she is improving, and we think she is improving every time as well,” said Guest.

“She has won handicaps so now it is time to try to get some black type. She has also been sold to American owners (Three Chimneys Racing LLC) and will run in new colours for the first time. I imagine she will end up in America eventually.

“I think she has improved again and goes to Newbury with a good chance.”

The other two runners, Devine Guest and Villa Royale, are still maidens
