Andrew Balding is sending a strong team to Royal Ascot and he has picked Arabian Star and Lay Time as his leading hopes of tasting success.

The in-form Kingsclere trainer has enjoyed a fine season to date, and Arabian Star is on a hat-trick after wins at Newmarket at the end of last season and a reappearance success at HQ in May.

He is a general 14-1 chance for the Royal Hunt Cup on Wednesday.

Successful in a Listed race at Sandown in September, Balding believes there were excuses for Lay Time‘s disappointing effort when favourite for a Group Three on Investec Oaks day at Epsom.

Balding said: “I suppose the main ones would be Arabian Star in the Royal Hunt Cup and there’s Lay Time in the Windsor Forest.

“I think it was just the track at Epsom last time that was Lay Time‘s undoing as she was entitled to run much better on the form of the horses she had been working with at home.

“I Love’Me is also going to run (in the Windsor Forest) but I think she will need it as we haven’t been able to get her out this season.

“Night Carnation will run well in the King’s Stand, while Desert Law will probably wait for the Wokingham, although we haven’t quite decided.”

Meanwhile, Balding’s star colt Bonfire is to bypass the Royal meeting and wait for the Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown on July 7.

He will be on a retrieval mission as he disappointed in the Investec Derby after winning the Dante Stakes at York in good style.

Balding said: “Bonfire will wait for the Eclipse. I think if you ignore the Derby run he’s entitled to run in a race like that.”
