Askar Tau is set to have a second crack at the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot after Marcus Tregoning declared himself satisfied with his prep run.

The Group Two-winning stayer was sixth behind Opinion Poll in the Henry II Stakes at Sandown last Thursday in his first race since he was fifth to Fame And Glory in the two-and-a-half-mile Group One in Berkshire last summer.

“He’s in very good form and goes to Ascot for the Gold Cup,” said Tregoning.

“It will be a hot race for him, but he ran very well last year.”

No decision has yet been made whether Tregoning’s fellow Gold Cup possible Hawaafez will take her chance.

In Contention

The four-year-old filly put herself in contention for a place in the line-up with a convincing success in the Listed Aston Park Stakes at Newbury last month.

“There’s a chance she might run in the Gold Cup as well, but only a chance because it’s not been discussed at great length yet,” said Tregoning.

Tregoning has the Royal Hunt Cup at the big five-day fixture in mind for Boom And Bust.

The five-year-old has not been seen since winning the totesport Mile at Glorious Goodwood in late July and is being prepared for the one-mile handicap at the Royal meeting.

“The Hunt Cup is the plan for him,” he said.

“He’s well and we’re very happy with him. There’s all sorts of reasons to take into account for him to reach his peak, but he’s certainly finding it by degrees.

“I’ve no worries about starting him off there without a run.”
