Sent-off the 11-8 favourite, Sapphire was given a confident ride by Pat Smullen, hitting the front well over two furlongs out and coming home in isolation for an easy win from Betterbetterbetter.

Connections will now look for a first Group 1 success with the daughter of Medicean, who needs cut in the ground to be seen at her best.

Trainer Dermot Weld said: "I’m very pleased with her comeback performance and this is a very progressive mare, she's a class act.

"She's a mare we'll probably have to travel with to the likes of France with but she'll probably run in the Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh next. The way she won there she'd have won over a mile and a quarter as easily as a mile and a half."

Goldplated made it a true test but, while the opposition started to come under pressure, Sapphire eased through on the inner travelling strongly for Smullen.

The runner-up took a little time to find top gear but stayed on well, with her stablemate Soon back in third.

Smullen said: "I hope she's a Group 1 mare. she did it very easy but she must have some cut. I would imagine it will be a Group 1 next but there must be some ease."
