Fury wins the Tattersalls Millions 2YO Trophy at Newmarket 02.10.2010

THE sole British-trained runner on the card Fury could only finish fifth under Ryan Moore behind Vagabond Shoes in the Group 3 Prix du Chemin’de Fer du Nord over 1m.

The winner picked up the Group 3 Prix Messidor at Maisons-Laffitte last July with trainer Yan Durepaire freely admitting he had been fortunate that Roger Charlton had chosen to withdraw Cityscape because of the fast ground.

But there was no luck involved as Vagabond Shoes and Stephane Pasquier held off the late thrust of Moonwalk In Paris to score by three quarters of a length on his first start since returning from Dubai.

Spanish-based owner Javier Martinez Salmean previously enjoyed great success with the globetrotting Doctor Dino and was Durepaire’s first patron when the Chantilly native set up shop in Madrid.

“The plan was to go back for the Prix Messidor but now he’s won a Group 3 we’ll have to see,” said Durepaire, who now trains near Chriostophe Ferland at La Teste in the South West of France.

The day’s other Group 3 also escaped the major stables as Davy Bonilla made all aboard 15-1 shot Remus’De La Tour for Provencal trainer Keven Borgel.

Masterstroke was closing rapidly near the line under a frantic Maxime Guyon but failed by a short neck to give Andre Fabre a fifteenth success in the race.

The British and Irish apprentices acquitted themselves well in the annual team competition among European racing schools, this year run under the banner of the Longines Future stars.

Jacob Butterfield fared best, finishing third aboard the unfancied Piccolo.

“He’s been off for a while but he was staying on well at the end and you should watch out for him when he runs in 12 days time,” said Butterfield, who is apprenticed to Richard Fahey.
