Ralph Beckett It was however a desperately close thing, and after defeating Cherry Danon by a short head, Electrelane had to survive a stewards’ inquiry, as she and the runner-up came very close in the final furlong. But the stewards let the result stand, although winning jockey Jim Crowley was fined for overuse of the whip.

It was Crowley’s first ride in Germany and he said: “It could not have worked out better. I was always handily placed and she fought very bravely all the way up the straight.”

Beckett was obviously delighted but admitted to feeling relieved after the result of the photo and the stewards’ inquiry were announced.

“We have had this race in mind for quite a long time; she has improved an awful lot, but we are not sure where to go with her now. The owner could not be here, he also had a runner at Chantilly, and as he couldn’t be in two places at once, decided to stay at home and watch them on the internet.”

Andrasch Starke sent Cherry Danon straight into the lead, but Electrelane also broke well and raced in third, with Survey in second on the outside.

Two furlongs out, Crowley launched his challenge and for a moment appeared to be going to win easily, but Cherry Danon kept fighting back and the pair had a ding-dong battle throughout the final 300 yards.

“I was always just holding the other filly,” Crowley said, while Starke added, “I was beaten fair and square and never had to stop riding.”

On her previous start Electrelane had gone down by a length to Mick Channon’s Laugh Out Loud at York, and this form was given a big boost when the latter scored in good style at Chantilly an hour before the German race.

This was not lost on the local punters, who backed Electrelane down to odds-on favouritism.
