Talk of the Triple Crown has been rife since Camelot ran away with Saturday’s Investec Derby but, while British racing fans are unlikely to know whether the dream will become reality until mid-September, the United States is firmly in the grip of Triple Crown fever.

The relative rags to riches story of I’ll Have Another and his trainer and jockey, Doug O’Neill and Mario Gutierrez, has gripped a nation.

The Flower Alley colt upset the odds in the Kentucky Derby at the start of May to win his second Grade One with many observers opining that he was the beneficiary of an ill-judged ride by Mike Smith aboard Bodemeister.

The punters agreed and Bob Baffert’s colt was sent off favourite to reverse the placings in the Preakness only for O’Neill’s charge to confirm his authority with a stunning late run to score by a neck.

With the first two legs under their belts, all focus turned to Saturday’s Belmont Stakes and the possibility of heralding a first winner of the Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978.

His trainer, however, is taking it all in his stride: “I wouldn’t be so upright if the horse wasn’t doing so good. He’s doing well. He’s eating good. He looks well”

he told www.dailyracingform.com.

“I’m very confident,” he added. “Not cocky or arrogant, but confident. He’s four more good gallops away from making history.”

The Belmont Stakes draw takes place at 11 a.m. local time on Wednesday, 6th June.
