Henrietta Knight failed to end her hugely successful career on a high when her final two runners were well beaten at Fontwell.

The West Lockinge trainer, who won a hat-trick of Cheltenham Gold Cups with the great Best Mate, was out of luck with My Friend Riquet and Seventh Hussar, both ridden by Dominic Elsworth.

My Friend Riquet was 11th of 12th behind Romeo Americo in the Flowers Unlimited – Fontwell Park’s Recommended Florist Maiden Hurdle.

Seventh Hussar was last to finish as Blue Hills took the Hope for Hearing, Evie’s Race Handicap Chase.

Knight, 65, announced her retirement last month due to the ill health of her husband, former jockey Terry Biddlecombe.

Based in Wantage, Oxfordshire, Knight saddled over 700 winners, beginning training in July 1989.

Despite her defining association with Best Mate, Knight was also responsible for Edredon Bleu, who won the Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham in 2000 and the King George VI Chase at Kempton in 2003.

Other significant horses in Knight’s care include Impek, Racing Demon, Calgary Bay and, most recently, Somersby, who provided the trainer with her last Grade One winner in the Victor Chandler Chase in January.
