Poet had to settle for fourth as No Risk At All landed the Group Three La Coupe at Longchamp.

Clive Cox’s raider built up an early lead under Pat Cosgrave in the 10-furlong heat but the distress signals were evident as the field turned for home.

As Poet floundered in front, No Risk At All and Meandre emerged to challenge but the former was well in control and strolled home under Ioritz Mendizabal.

Meandre, trained by Andre Fabre, had been sent off the odds-on favourite despite disappointing at Newmarket in the Jockey Club Stakes on his seasonal reappearance with his trainer blaming the testing conditions.

This was the fourth consecutive defeat for last year’s Grand Prix’de Paris winner who now has something to prove as a result although this trip may well have been on the short side.

The winner, whose relatives include Grade One winning chaser Nickname, was winning for the first time in a Group race but had shown improved form this season, most recently when a staying on fourth in the Group One Prix‘d’Ispahan behind Golden Lilac a stablemate of Meandre.
