Royal Ascot Preview – Part One.
Over the next couple of days I will give you all a brief rundown of the main races at the big meeting next week – Royal Ascot!
Today, I cover the first two days of this fantastic meeting, starting with :-
Day 1 Tuesday 19th June
The Queen Anne Stakes
The Queen Anne Stakes is a Group 1 race, that is open to horses aged four years or older over a distance of 1 mile.
This will probably be the most watched race over all of the world…….
This could be Frankels race, and it will ‘be all about the boy!’
There is a possiblity that Frankel may run over a longer distance of 1 mile 2 furlongs in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes. We shall find out soon!
There are plenty entered in this race at present, but once the cat is out of the bag as to which race he will run in you will see them fall away quickly, as it takes a brave trainer to take on Frankel, when you could win another race easily!
King’s Stand Stakes
The second race is the King’s Stand Stakes, a Group1 race which is open to horses aged three years or older. It is a ‘shortie’ run over a distance of 5 furlongs
It is now the fourth leg of the international race series, the Global Sprint Challenge, and can attract foreign horses running in the series.
This race will be a tricky, but great race, and there are plenty of big guns entered for this event. We may be able to dig out a very good price in this stampede of a race.
We shall need to look again after the declaration stage.
St. James’s Palace Stakes
The third race of the day is the St. James’s Palace Stakes is a Group1 race, which is open to three-year-old colts. It is run over a distance of 1 mile.
The entries to this race are generally horses that have had success in the English and Irish 2000 Guineas, or in some other races abroad, such as the easy to pronounce Poule d’Essai des Poulains.
The first ever race only started with only one entrant, and the race was a walkover, this year is going to be different sauce!
There are plenty of big names entered, but many may not run in this race by the time it runs. I have my eye on more than one!
Day 2 – Wednesday 20th June
Windsor Forest Stakes
The second race is the Windsor Forest Stakes, it is a Group2 race, which is open to thoroughbred fillies and mares aged four years or older. It is run over a distance of 1 mile.
This race is one of a few were designed as an incentive to keep more mares from being prematurely retired to stud
The trainer Michael Stoute has been lucky here, with three wins, but the race has only existed for seven years, so there are no concrete trends to go with, apart from if you think the girl has it in her or not.
The Free Horse Tips won in this race in 2010 with the easy to spell – Strawberrydaiquiri, named after the sweet cocktail of crushed strawberries.
Prince of Wales’s Stakes
The third race of the day is The Prince of Wales’s Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain which is open to thoroughbreds aged four years or older. It is run at Ascot over a distance of 1 mile and 2 furlongs.
The runners in this race will be pivitol on whether Frankel runs in it or not! Once we know, then the race shall open up to some good study!
