Shantaram could head to Royal Ascot after getting off the mark with a workmanlike success at Newmarket on Friday.

The King Edward VII Stakes remains a possibility for the John Gosden-trained three-year-old even though he made hard work of landing prohibitive odds of 1-8.

Shantaram finished a close second in his three previous starts, notably behind subsequent Investec Derby runner-up Main Sequence in the Lingfield Derby Trial.

“He’s come out of it fine. He just did not like that ground at all,” said Hugo Lascelles, racing manager to owner Lady Bamford.

“It sort of gave us a bit of a fright. Anyway, he’s off the mark. The form book doesn’t lie and hopefully we’re on the right track.

“We are looking at various options. There’s Royal Ascot, the King Edward, and we’ll just see how he goes in the next two weeks.”
