Report: York, Saturday

Bond Tyres Trophy Handicap 6f, 3yo

SHOLAAN was in a league of his own at York on Saturday as he powered clear inside the final two furlongs to score by an impressive five lengths for trainer William Haggas and jockey Liam Jones.

Blinkered for the first time, the 10-1 shot travelled well and showed a blistering turn of foot to sprint readily clear of his toiling rivals.

Gabriel's Lad claimed second ahead of Glen Moss in third and Boris Grigoriev in fourth.

Nameitwhatyoulike made the running on the far side and he was tracked closely by Sholaan. Pea Shooter led the main group and the well fancied Priceless Jewel, sent off the 5-1 favourite, was positioned on his outside.

But as the field approached the final two furlongs, it was a one-horse race as Sholaan burst to the front.

Priceless Jewel weakened tamely after briefly threatening to challenge down the middle of the track and Top Cop, who tracked the far side group, failed to pick on the soft ground.

Gabriel's Lad attempted to claw back the deficit but he had to settle for a well-beaten second.

The winning rider said: "He's a really nice horse. When he won at Wolverhampton he just ran about a bit so we tried the blinkers. The ground was the big unknown today but he's loved it.

"I think he'd go on any ground based on his all-weather form and the blinkers didn't make that much difference, they just helped him concentrate. We really like him and he should go on to better things."
