1pt win Lexi’s Hero in 14.55 Newmarket at 12/1 (bet365, Sky Bet) Runs well here, trainer in form and primed for a big run.
1pt win Swiss Franc in 14.55 Newmarket at 16/1 (General) Only wins here and this track and this trip can see him in a better light.

It’s low-key stuff this Saturday as we lurch from the Derby to Royal Ascot but there are plenty of handicaps to get stuck into around the country including the Fly London Southend To Barcelona Handicap at Newmarket.

I’ve picked out this race a) because the bookies have priced it up and b) because Pearl Ice makes the market at 5/2 and I’m keen to take him on.

David Barron’s sprinter looked in very good nick at Ripon on Wednesday but that was a much weaker race than this and the 6lb-penalty combined with the quick reappearance means he is vulnerable at the prices.

Plenty of bookies go 16/1* about SWISS FRANC and that’s the sort of price I’m keen to snap up as David Elsworth’s horse may be an infrequent winner but when he does score it’s at HQ.

He won his maiden here on the Rowley Mile five years ago but much more recent evidence came last year on the July Course when he won a six-runner 5f handicap off a mark of 89.

He’s back down to a mark just 3lbs higher now, and, as he was doing his best work at the finish in the aforementioned contest I think the step back up to six furlongs on this course will be absolutely ideal.

The last two races he has contested haven’t seen him in his best light but he has excuses. At Ascot he was far too keen first-time out and five furlongs at York doesn’t bring out the best in him.

At least he’s dropped in the handicap following those efforts and six furlongs on the July Course should see him perform to a much better standard.

Certainly, I think he has a better chance than his odds imply.

I want two strings to my bow in this race and my second selection is another horse who acts well on the track.

LEXI’S HERO is the animal in question and at 12/1 he’s got to be backed off a mark of 98.

The last twice he’s run on the July Course he would’ve gone very close to winning off this mark. In July last year he was second off a mark of 100 beaten just over a length and a month later he was a close sixth off a mark of 103.

His prominent racing style seems to suit this track well and I can see him getting into a good rhythm up towards the front under Frankie Dettori.

He was well-backed at York last time and wasn’t beaten far despite being 12th and he ran well on very soft ground at Chester the time before that.

Both of those runs were over five furlongs but he’s more effective at six and I think he’s primed to run a big race.

Kevin Ryan’s horses are in terrific form and at double-figure prices Lexi’s Hero appeals as one to help his good run continue.

* Ladbrokes advertised prices say they will be going 25/1 about Swiss Franc from 8.30 am Saturday morning.
