Derek Shaw doesn’t expect Top Boy to be disgraced when he takes on the best juveniles around so far in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot on Tuesday.

The Exceed And Excel colt showed he would not be out of place in this company when finishing second to the highly-rated Sir Prancealot in the Listed National Stakes at Sandown.

Although still a maiden after four starts, Top Boy had previously shown a fair level of form when fourth at Ascot behind Cay Verde, who went on to lift a Listed race at the Curragh.

All Top Boy‘s races to date have been over the minimum trip but he tries six furlongs this time round.

“He finished second behind what is supposed to be the best two-year-old that’s been out (Sir Prancealot) so he’s entitled to be there,” said Leicestershire-based Shaw.

“I’m not saying he’s going to win but he won’t disappoint.”
