Craig Williams has been ruled out of the running for the ride aboard Melbourne Cup hero Dunaden in next week’s Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Williams was the intended rider of Mikel Delzangles six-year-old in Australia’s most famous race until picking up a late suspension, but was back in the plate when winning the Hong Kong Vase at the end of 2011.

The Australian pilot will be at the Berkshire track to partner Ortensia on Tuesday in the King’s Stand Stakes but has another commitment later in the week.

“Craig was hoping to ride the horse as he’s coming over but unfortunately he’s obliged to ride in Japan on Saturday,” said David Redvers, racing manager for Dunaden’s owner Pearl Bloodstock.

“He’s definitely going for the Hardwicke and we’re looking to confirm a jockey soon.”
